Regarding Seattle, It was once served by 4 Class One railroads, ( Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Union Pacific, & Milwaukee Road ) as well as smaller Pacific Coast RR, and Interurbans running both North to Everett & Bellingham, and South to Tacoma. The Milwaukee Road had the most diverse operations, with electric passenger trackage into Seattle Union Station from Black River Jct. in Renton, as well as extensive car barge operations across Puget Sound to Port Townsend and Bellingham. Rail car barge operations to Alaska continue today, from the joint BNSF / U.P. yard and ferry slip on Harbor Island.
