Transporting Water

Article the other day about Lake Mead at his lowest level since is was created.
The drought and use of water are only going to grow (especially in California)
Water by train would be cheaper than water by truck
(what some communities are using now with their supply dried up)
Instead of poaching water from states like Montana, they should have a fleet of Super Tankers bringing it down from Alaska (or the glacier melt) have the tankers make port in Eureka, San Francisco, Oakland, Stockton, Oxnard, Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Diego
Distribute through pipe lines, railroad tankers and trucks
Expensive? yes, but what are you willing to pay for water when the tap goes dry?
What would the cost be compared to Desalination? (including the NIMBY and other factors trying to build a desal plant)
