Dynamic brakes glow in the dark?

I camped out on the east side of Sherman Hill. In the middle of the night (dark of the moon, so it was REALLY dark), I saw a train come down the hill. On one of the units, I could see a red glow in the dynamic brake area, in through the vents. This was a GE 4400 HP unit, fireman's side, but I couldn't tell you more specifically. I didn't see it on the next unit, though it was also a GE 4400 HP.

Is this normal? Has anyone else seen this?
