The only time I saw a "glow" from the grids was just before they ate themselves, usually a free 4th of July show. The EMDS had a AR10 Alt. that were used so they could have better control on fan speeds. It is easier to govern speeds with AC than DC in this sort of operation. That goes for the cooling fans too.
Some of the old GEs had some sort of air operated fans or controls that leaked, so when a grid did blow you couldn't put the fire out because of the blowing air. Not only the wiring but the grease in the area. Fun times.
