Saw my first glowing orange DB grids one summer night many years ago on a UP train descending the 0.6% through Palouse River Canyon in SE WA. Have seen it many times since, including right behind my house where UP trains descend a mere 0.45% through Post Falls, ID. Heavy current flowing through resistors; the kitchen toaster comparison says it all.
