No! Cowardly it is. especially when it is done to avoid facing up to life as it is. But even more so - it is a profoundly selfish act! Requiring that the perp is narrowly thinking only of him/herself.
Most (95%) of suicide attempts fail, and fail for very good reason; they never were real in the first place. But playing chicken with some danger is often dramatically repeated, until the grim odds of the game are fulfilled. So what is seen as a suicide attempt is not necessarily intended to cause ones own death, but instead is a very selfish attempt at bullying and manipulating others. Moreover, the wanton disregard shown to others such as train drivers, is profound and grotesque selfishness.
As inconveniencing and annoying as these high drama events are to the public, one should have compassion and empathy. Not particularly for the perpetrators, but certainly for the objects of their bullying - their loved ones. They need and deserve it. They are often scarred for life for no real fault of their own, just the same as the locomotive engineer.
