A pretty good story, with some of the usual predictable responses......
Let's all be afraid, be very afraid, and let's not forget to throw in stupid, too.......
We don't actually seem to have a better rail passenger safety record, when one compares our deaths to these other countries deaths per the volume of rail passenger miles actually traveled, so if that is the purported purpose of these regulations, then they have failed to show much real effectiveness, in that regard.
Protectionism, of former US rail car manufacturers, has been the real reason we've continued to keep these clearly outdated and costly FRA "safety" standards, not protection of passengers. This bureaucratic scheme, which shows little resulting reduction in risks (especially compared with reducing collisions), continues on, despite the fact that we've lost almost all of the passenger rail car manufacturers these regulations were originally intended to protect.
