According to the statistics Shaw cites in his 1978 book A History of Railroad Accidents Safety Precautions and Operating Procedures, we have a better passenger safety record, not perfect, better, particularly when measured in the context of fatalities per wreck. People skew statistics to suit their own points of view and agendas.
Last time I checked, the CFR compression strength requirement for passenger cars was 1,000,000 lbs. Think about it when you look at how badly those Italian trains telescoped and that German ICE train shredded itself when it derailed and struck the overpass pillars 20 years ago.
