What Fox News story did this solar flare bull come from?
Yes, we have been in several active solar flare phases over the last 3-5 years, and they have not had much measurable effect on temperature variation. They have caused some havoc with communications satellites, and did result in a few Auroras visible down to Colorado.
The last ten years have cumulatively been the warmest ever recorded in our limited recent recorded history, and among the most rapid rate of increase, especially in the artic and antarctic, where it really counts.
Variations in Solar activity have been minimal contributors, especially flares, to observable temperature variation. Variations in jet water/ice contrails at high altitude and atmospheric dust have been had much more of an effect in dampening solar light penetration, as was discovered in an unplanned experiment that was conducted, by grounding all of the airplanes for a week and measuring ground temperature without contrails, as a result of the tragic events of the week of 9/11/2001. And, this experiment's obsevations confirmed that this effect actually appears to have been masking warming effects from the massive increase in atmospheric CO2 measured in the last century? You may choose not to believe, but as my biology professor once told me, nature doesn't really care what we believe?
Snow in the late spring and early summer in the Palouse and the upper Rockies is, as was noted, just part of the normal range of "weird" extremes in this part of the country. And, I'll also be betting for 100 on the 4th of July, too! Trout fishing in six inches of wet snow can be kind of fun, though, with enough whiskey to keep warm.
However, railroads (the other reason for this website) do have a lower per ton CO2 emission rate due to significantly lower per ton fuel consumption. This is another reason why Warren Buffet is getting richer. And, the more BNSF he buys, the better my portfolio looks. Go Warren!
