The only problem with this scenario is that the black box they were after is the one in the cab car, not the locomotive. Besides, all they have to do is stick a memory stick or card into the readout slot and wait for the system to spill its guts (maybe there was no battery power and they had to wait for it to be restored). The cab car is technically a locomotive, an "MU locomotive", but let's not confuse the media in their blissful state of (in)competence.
