It all depends how the crossing is designed. The bells/electronic box, lights and gates are all the same. Yes some look different than others but the wiring is the same. The gates have contacts that feed juice back to the relay cabinet as to what position they are in. If the carrier wants they can run wires to those too and back to the cabinet.

Now, back at the relay cabinet, that is where you can do just about anything you want, all with simple track type relays. Bells on, bells off, bells time out, all kinds of things. Time out, sound detectors, movement detectors. The flasher relay is set for so many a minute and that doesn't change. There are also circuits that the railroad can give the highway departments like CalTrans, ODOT or what ever outfit that runs traffic signals. All the carrier provides is a wire. I was told many years ago it is 3 wires that show when the xing is activated or not. Anyway, the list goes on.

The only thing gates are not set up for is to give someone a swift kick in the ass when they don't pay attention anyway and walk or drive into the path of a train. As was said, you can't fix stupid.
