Fantasies and fitful delusions about railroads and the coming war?

Wars are actually bad for the economy, in the long run, they raise interest rates, cut consumer demand, and we live in a time when not enough of the "materials" of war are carried in sufficient volumes to have as much impact as to offset the likely losses to "civilian" traffic.

War and revolution are the only two factors in the last 200 years of capitalism, that have resulted in very significant net losses to the wealthiest, and have caused untold pain and anguish amongst all.

The US in WWII is always pointed too as the great economic "exception" in war, because we supplied the world, and we were never bombed. But, that was with 90 percent tax rates on the wealthy, severe price controls, extreme civilian rationing, a draft of nearly 15 million men over 5 years, and a run up of the national debt that was three times today's levels as a percentage of GDP. At the end of the war the US accounted for almost 90 of world manufacturing, because we'd "leveled" the competition.
