They should rearrange the furniture

They shouldn't have put tables in those trains. It should be just straight chairs. Chairs and bike space. That's all you need.

The reason is that SMART is going to be just for commuters during commute hours. If the train is a success, you are going to want all the space you can muster for peak loads. These commuters will always have the option of going back to their cars. If they can't find a spot to sit down, they will go to their cars. Because unlike Caltrain commuters, who face a dismal parking situation in San Francisco, a SMART rider can probably find a place to park wherever they are going. And it will just make more sense to drive the car and deal with traffic than have to stand for a whole trip, while the guy next to them has his laptop setup on the big tables.
