SP had nothing to do with it, other than many in the Coast Division engineering Dept went to BARTD when the Coast was merged with the Western. Others went to the Cal P U Commission. The gauge was selected on the basis of rollover possibilities related to the combination of maximum train speed and highest crosswinds. Turns out to have been misguided because BARTD trains have never gone as fast as anticipated.
