BART and VTA are considering a 45' diameter TBM for the extension through downtown San Jose. This approach offers the advantage that the stations would largely fit within the 45'-wide bore, so cut and cover construction would be minimized to the vertical circulation elements that would access the station platforms. Seems like a cool approach. I hope it works.
On the subject of BART to San Jose, they intend to build northwest from Diridon to Santa Clara. That seems like an unnecessary waste to me. Every transit project should be designed to allow for future extension, but how about in a direction not already served by rail transit, such as along Stevens Creek?
