The first low - nose EMD's, ( GP-9, GP-18, GP-20, and SD-24 ) came from La Grange with a large, one piece main windshield that had to have expensive to replace, even in the days before the FRA Bullet - Proof Glazing. Santa Fe went to the effort of changing over to a 2 - piece design on their rebuilt GP-20's and SD-26's.
I'm not sure Espee played an active part in the low - nose revolution, considering that they did not chop - nose any of their high - nose EMD's ( GP-9, SD-7, SD-9 ) when rebuilding them.
