DPU's aren't automated. They are radio controlled from the lead unit. The engineer can set them to do exactly the same thing as the lead units or he/she can control them independently but they only follow the engineer's commands. The only thing they do on their own is that if radio contact is lost they will go to idle.

It's basically the same thing as a toy RC car but on a much grander scale with more variables.
