Man looking at the comments I do not envy the MTA. So much visceral complaining, and in totally opposite directions. "SF is pandering to buses, Drivers are selfish, They're going too fast, Bureaucracy is too slow..." Americans are so ungovernable and selfish, I'm not surprised our country is so divided.
Look, BRT is cost effective. It has a lot of the benefits of a subway line while being 1/10 the cost (~$30M/mi vs. $300M/mi). We can't complain about slow Muni service AND fault them for investing in its busiest corridor. SF is a city - it should be, and is by policy, transit first. There is no great city on earth that solved it transportation problem by adding more lanes and parking spaces. It just doesn't scale sustainably. Being car-centric worked for all of, what, 30 years before everything became congested and we ran out of space to build more suburbs, lanes, and freeways?
SF is a global "Alpha-" level city. We should have reliable, functional transit and Geary BRT would be an awesome addition to the corridor. But we're never going to become a fully functional city when some us still think the epitome of transport is expressways and capacious parking lots from the 1950s.« less
