Had WWII not happened, the railroads would have dieselized 10 years before they actually did. Most (not all) railroads saw the handwriting on the wall by the early 1940's. Steam had reached it's full; potential by then, further improvements were held back byt the law of diminshing returns. Diesels had not come close to their full potential even at that time, since most railroads tried to use and maintain them like they did the steamers, which was a drag on diesel usage.

Steam ain't coming back. The "improvments and advancements" touted today are highly overrated. Get used to it.
