I don't know about CalTrain locomotives, but as a generalization, your statement is not true. Diesel emissions from Metra locomotives at Chicago Union Station is a huge issue.

Recent improvements in diesel engine technology might[i][/i] make less compelling the case for replacing diesel locomotives with electrics. However, electric locomotives have superior acceleration characteristics compared to diesels. If there are plans to increase the frequency of CalTrain commute service, electric traction could be the better choice.
