Interesting responses.....
SWA is not in good shape. It has continued to prop up it share prices by convincing people that unique egos immune from aviation fuel prices have swami like powers in the marketplace. They have been smart in locking in favorable fuel futures, but this bit of good planning has its limits, and in the end SWA, as of this week, is just another struggling airline. Big talk from big corporate egos is usually a definite sign of underlying weakness.
Sacramento and the status quo of the dysfunctional CHSRA is the problem, not the solution. And, kissing their power hungry egotistical rear ends will not improve this situation, that's what they appear to revel in. This organization needs fundamental reform, including 1) a real plan, 2) real accountability, 3) effective management 4) independent oversight.
As to the UP, that is their negotiating position. They are negotiating on lots of things they want from the State right now. Don't believe everything you hear, they have a lot at stake and a lot to gain.
As to the market share for regional high speed rail networks around the world, it is between 50 and 250 miles, not the 400 between SFO and LAX. Most of these high speed rail "systems" were incremental, including improving the connecting "systems", and that is why they have been so effective. Yes, we will need the longer distances in the future, as airline fuel climbs in price. But, the immediate and doable needs for California is a long term strategy with more and faster services, as quickly as possible, in the intermediate distance markets. These are markets that already show significant demand, and which are already losing air services.
Buying into CHRSA nonsense, just because CHRSA nonsense is the only game in town, is nonsense. This organization needs to get its act together, or else we will watch a lot of taxpayer supported bond monies and taxpayer dollars being wasted.
Support a real high speed rail system for California, don't support a dubious political fiefdom, that fails to deliver. Tell the legislature you support HSR, but want fundamental reform of our transportation bureaucarcy, to insure that it is done right.
