Mr. EspeeGuy-- To answer your question, positively, about the restoration of SP 2472
(at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco) by the members and volunteers of the Golden Gate Railroad Museum (GGRM) ...... "The Restoration is INACCURATE !!"
Why ??
1. When Southern Pacific received all these different locomotives from BALDWIN, the tires of the driving wheels were painted "Aluminum Bronze" (kinda of a Light Gray).. From a distance looks kinda WHITE ... SP immediately brought out a paint brush-guy and some black paint.
2. Most of these locomotives including 2467 and 2472 "NEVER" had those 'Chrome Letters or Numbers' ... They were strictly painted on ! My official Southern Pacific source said that the GGRM gang at Hunters Point wanted to give all the "Glitz & Glamour" to their new Toy that would really make it stand out and look pretty !!
3. The letter 'S' in Southern Pacific on the Tender of 2472 is also painted Upside-down.
You might not notice this-- but my SP source says there "IS" a difference !
To Nudge-- I got so many books in my Library I couldn't find my SP Pacific book off hand. Will look again tomorrow. But then I suddenly remembered my old SP buddy and ran upstairs and phoned him. Infact, he knew who it was, because he has a video phone !
I don't want to divulge names, but my source stated he started with "SP" at 65-Market St in San Francisco in 1968 ! Almost fifty years ago !! 'Nuff said ??
Cheers.
