Next to the stack, there's a pipe extending from the smokebox with what looks like some sort of shield.

When I worked for the YW, I recall seeing this pipe, (there was one on each side of the stack and welded closed inside of the smoke-box) without any shield. These pipes were removed when the last boiler rebuild took place.

No one could figure out what function the pipes were there for. Would anyone care to reveal the secret, or make a guess at it? Would they be some sort of left-over from when the 19 was coal fired?
