For what it's worth: The side rods on the prototype 2095 are a space saving feature for the small trucks of this narrow gauge locomotive. The diesel actually uses a hydraulic transmission to power the outside axles on each truck. The side rods transfer that power from the outside axles to the inside axles, so that all axles are powered. On standard gauge four-axle Austrian diesel hydraulics, all of the axles are powered directly by the hydraulic transmission. But apparently doing that on this narrow gauge loco would have resulted in too much equipment to fit onto the trucks.
