The Modoc Line was an exception to this rule -- kind of. As originally marked upon the purchase of the Nevada - California - Oregon Railway, Espee had the mileposts increase when running from Fernley, NV., to Alturas, CA., as a train was still going away ( i.e: Eastbound ) from San Francisco, even though it was heading Northwest by compass direction. In 1963 Espee gained trackage rights over Western Pacific from Weso to Flanigan, where the Espee line had crossed the WP. This eliminated much trackage on the Southern end of the Modoc Line. Since the Modoc Line existed mainly to move forest products from Oregon South & East to Ogden, Espee would reverse the mileposts effective May 16, 1971, thereby marking Eastbound trackage in DE-creasing mileposts, but only until they reached Flanigan!!!
