It seems whether "trip" or "train" the numbering system lacks. The public transit systems (not Bart) use even and odd numbers to indicate direction of travel. Bus systems use run numbers (i.e. AC transits 4pm SB service was run x on schedule 132).

When they make schedule changes it will become confusing. Also note that the weekend schedules still us trip numbers which are similar to the weekday schedules.

One can only hope that since they are starting from scratch they can select a numbering system that represents set schedules and directions and can be easily adapted to support changes in the future from a public point of view. They can always use trip numbers internally.
