How to avoid gantlet tracks

Once upon a time, an Eastern railroad, probably New York City based, operated freight and high-level passenger service on the same rails.

Folding platform extensions were built into each passenger station. After the last passenger train passed each evening, the station agent flipped the extensions back onto the fixed platform.
Night freight service to local companies.
First shift station agent replaced the platform extensions.

First guess is Long Island Rail Road.

(Some old-timers pronounce it Longisland)
