SP had wanted them out of there for years before there was a merger
or even any talk of a merger. The intermodal operation was growing
and had already crowded the roundhouse and turntable, with trailers
and containers all over the place. Just to get to the roundhouse
required dodging not only parked trailers and containers, but also
watching out for hostler jockeys moving said equipment all the time.
The complication was that there was no place for them to move to
at the time.
