Re: The Hobby of Trains is dying

Being realistic, the internet has taken a big chuck of business away from the
traditional sources such as magazines and the likes. Discussion boards like the
one we are using now provides much more timely information then the "once-a-month"
publications. This is just my personal opinion but the model train hobby for me
ended years ago due to one reason: everything has gotten so stinking expensive!
The hobby is out of reach for many due to high costs, furthermore the quality of
Lionel & American Flyer sets in the 1950's available to the average family has now
become ridiculously expensive. Trains sold in the stores today are pure plastic
crap, which might not work next Christmas.
You are going to need a well supplied checking account to start a pike today. I know
it's always been an investment to build a model train but today it's reached collector
status. Practically everything in the RAILROAD hobby is expensive, books ($80-100), a
ticket for a Steam powered ride is out of my reach. I'll just have to enjoy the hobby
from my keyboard & monitor.
So it perhaps it has become an older generation hobby that still has the cash to buy what
they want, but the suppliers will eventually dry up when the buying pool shrinks beyond what
is profitable.
