I also have heard that the Altamont Commuter Express may need double-track in the future. It would seem a natural to re-track the former S.P. right-of-way that is very near the former W.P. track and use the two as a double-track railroad. Crossovers could be installed in many places. The negative aspect has already been mentioned. The route has a lower track speed than the present U.P. parallel route. Anyone know to alleviate this?
