A very stylish "Ahead" hand sign (night sign but some rails use it as a day sign too). The horn was for the crossing. Blowing for a crossing is mandatory per regulations. Doesn't matter if someone is standing on the front of the locomotive or not but it had nothing to do with the conductor's hand sign.
