Someone mentioned 3rd rail shoes on the car. They were temporary, being applied for moving the cars between Sacramento and Chico for periodic servicing (and not used in regular service).
North of Sacramento, the SN inherited the (open) 3rd rail from the Northern Electric, although overhead wire was used in a few towns. South of Sacramento, the OA&E used 1,200v, later raised to 1,500. The Holland Branch was built with 1,550v overhead. On the Bay Bridge, the SN used the 1,200v overhead which was also used by the SP cars.
