Don't know what size those wheel lathes are (90" or larger?), but the key factor for the UP Steam Crew, over the last 30 or so years has been the ability of a contract shop, like Strasburg, to perform installation of new tires and crankpins, plus re-machine the wheel centers, and re-quarter all the new crankpins. Both the Strasburg steam Shop and the Tennessee Valley RR Museum shop have highly qualified & experienced Machinists on a full time staff basis, and thus are able to handle such outside contract work plus do the job fairly quickly.
