Back when I started out, we had brake clubs, which you needed for apply the old staff type ahnd brakes.

For over 100 years crews got on and off moving equipment, but suddenly in about 1992 bean counters with no little to operating experience declared it "unsafe". If anything, not getting on and off moving equipment has killed trainmen's skills for switching cars (and certainly made it more time consuming when they try). It's also the reason why I stopped running switch engines and went out on the road.
