One thing to watch out for if you move from California is estate tax. Both Washington and Oregon have estate taxes that kick in at lower levels than the federal estate tax. California has no estate tax.

For reference, the federal estate tax begins at an estate (after deducting charitable donations) of $5,490,000 in 2017 for a single person, double that for married. And the exemption of your spouse is inheritable. You have to be in the top .2% of estates to pay anything.

The Republicans are always talking about eliminating the estate tax which they call the "death tax". The problem is that would also eliminate the updating of basis of investments and require the payment of lots of capital gains taxes. So it will be a good talking point to bash the Democrats with but will almost definitely go nowhere.
