I don't know who the guy was that came up with "great" idea but he should have stayed home. For some reason, they thought they were losing too many automatic brake valves. (26) So, they put a bolt and washer in the top so you could not remove the handle. Only trouble was if someone was walking through the power and the engineers seat had to be turned to get in or out of the rear door, it pushed the handle into emergency. They also put pins into the independent handles for awhile.

Can't forget the reverser problem. There were 2 different ones for an EMD and 3 different ones for a GE. With the standard control stand it got it down to one. In a pinch you could use a caboose key to hold up the locking pin and move them. With the old EMD round controller you needed that type of handle or you were out of luck.
