Greyhound had some semaphore-like signs for flagging - a metal sign with two semaphore-like blades which could be raised to flag the bus (the blades painted on opposite sides to indicate direction).

I saw one at Storrie (Feather River Canyon), and another at the junction of CA 108 (Sonora Pass Rd.) and US 395.
