Terkel's oral history was from one of the black sailors who refused to go back to work (in the same hurried / unsafe manner) after the explosion. He was charged with mutiny and placed aboard a ship for a time before the being released - recall it was a dishonorable discharge. To his credit, he was philosophical about the situation. He said something to the effect that he did not incite mutiny but that other followed his lead to refuse to work unsafely but that Uncle Sam couldn't stand by without taking action.
I also recall some reference that a train crossing the Carquinez Bridge sustained damage from the force of the explosion.
