These were, most likely, military trains to and from Joint Base Lewis McChord. There is a railhead on the northeast side of the Fort Lewis logistics area, reached by the former NP Prairie Line.
Trains heading south from JBLM load at the railhead, head north through the McChord air base area on the Prairie Line to Lakewood, then reverse direction to head south on the line through Dupont to Nisqually, where they join the BNSF Seattle Sub.
Trains returning to JBLM from the south would reverse the process.
