The old covered wagons on the SP were more of a " P-chunk, p-chunk. The bells were down on the firemans side and usually covered with crater grease.

I think ATKs were in the same place and the early ones the bell would go on when you blew the whistle. But with all the noise, the engineer had a hard hearing it. Many a fireman would come over and tell me or give me a sign to shut it off.
