Lead locomotives

I don’t see it as much, since older models have for the most part have either been purged from Class I fleets or have be relegated to switching duty, but many times the lead locomotive of a lash-up was much older than newer ones behind it. Can anyone give some insight about why? I would assume that newer locomotives ride better and have better cab environments than older ones, and thus would be preferred by crews.
