This was the case years ago. Example... When Espee assigned the then new SD35's to Bakersfield(and Colton for Beaumont) they often were trailing the SD9's still assigned. The SD35's were the first units delivered with high capacity dynamic brakes and would "fry" the SD9's if they were leading. Electrical modifications were applied to the SD9's to make them compatible with newer locomotives. Modern translation... an SD40-2(basic, flat dynamics) trailing a C44(extended, flat) works, but the SD40-2 will only put out +/- 600 amps vs. the +/- 900 that the C44 will put out in full dynamics...

Computer screens shutting down for no reason... had it happen a few times, not fun...
