I think when the newer engines came with the desktop controls, a lot of crews preferred the old style AAR stand and so they actually preferred using the older style locos up front. Now the latest engines have reverted back to a modern version of the AAR control stand, so that problem is starting to be solved.

This is what I've heard, could be wrong.
