The Milpitas Sub. what is left of it, has been divided into 2 "Industrial Leads." The North Milpitas Industrial Lead runs from milepost 0 to milepost 8.5 The Milpitas Industrial Lead runs from milepost 9.7 to milepost 12. From there south to milepost 20 is the San Jose Industrial Lead. CTC has been removed from service and retired in its entirety on the North Milpitas Industrial Lead. I have been told that most of that lead has been torn out from just north of Warm Springs to Niles.
The Warm Springs Sub. has been converted in the middle segment at Warm Springs to an Industrial Lead. It is still a Subdivision on either end. The Automatic Block Signal System (ABS) has been retired between MP 4 and MP 8.3. As posted above by Craig, it sees a fair amount of traffic on the North segment. The South segment sees very little traffic at all because there is very little traffic in and out of Warm Springs and Milpitas yards to/from the south. The maximum speed on this Sub. is 10 MPH, a far cry from the SP days when it had a maximum speed of 40 MPH. Because of the speed and the fact it is now an Industrial Lead in the middle, makes the chance next to impossible for a reroute of Passenger Trains of a Passenger Special. Info. verified from the current UP Roseville Area Timetable #4 (dated 12-18-05). This is a far cry from the SP days when the Capitol Corridor first began in 1991, as some of those trains and ocasionally, train #11 and 14 would use this route. Caltrain, some years back ran a demonstration train over this line from San Jose to Warm Springs, but do to funding issues, it was never to become a permanent service. If it had come to pass, things would be very different toady on this Sub. & Industrial Lead.
