I'd say that on the road, under generally level conditions, yes, a little. In a yard, I'd say lower is better. BRC didn't order GP's with 65:12 for the fun of it. Constant throttle movement and stopping and starting with cuts would see the lower geared engine come up equal.

As far as acceleration, take two identical old EMD's, one geared 60:17 and one geared 62:15. The difference in time trials would probably be around 1.5 to 2.5 percent.
