Regarding " low " gear ratio diesel locomotives, the DL & W ( Lackawanna ) ordered F - 3's with 65/12 gears for use as helpers in the Pocono Mtns. of Pennsylvania. And successor Erie Lackawanna used their E - 8's on freights West of Marion. OH., where grades were favorable.
Southern Pacific also played the gear ratio game, using " higher " gearing on Cotton Belt diesels for their relatively flat operating profile. Espee even swapped entire trucks between F - Units for the same result.
