The "old" Loop had 2-8-0's #40 & #44 that came from the IRCA in Central America (they actually ran more, at least in their later years, in El Salvador). When the Loop operator pulled out in 2004 the two locomotives went to the CO RR Museum in Golden for "storage" but #40 was occasionally operated there. #44 had been dismantled in 1999 for repairs that were never completed and #44 remains in pieces to this day.
At the same time #40 came out of Central America in 1972 locomotive #111 came out at the same time to a different private buyer. #111 was acquired by History Colorado (formerly known as the CO Historical Society), owners of the Loop RR, in 2011. After overhaul including a new boiler #111 entered service on the Loop in 2016.
#40 was acquired from the former Loop operator by the current Loop operator in 2016. It is undergoing overhaul and will reenter service on the Loop in 2019.
#44 still languishes in scattered pieces, still owned by the old Loop operator (who owns and operates the Royal Gorge Route RR in Canon City).
