The satellite photos in Google Maps date from when the trench was under construction, at least for the high-resolution stuff in the urban area, so it's not really current. At the time, though, there clearly was activity (cars in industrial spurs, etc.) from downtown Reno all the way to just short of the state line. The rest of the line appears in the satellite stuff to be intact; just not used. Connection to the main line was just about at the east end of the trench work.

At the time of the photos, considerable activity was noted around Parr Ave. (small intermodal facility even); N. Virginia near Security Circle (industrial tracks); near Seneca Drive (ditto), the former Stead AFB complex; and at what looks like a propane or other gas facility on S. Reno Park near the state line. Interesting - the photo even caught a hi-rail truck wandering the line.

Considering the twists and turns, and knowing about some of the steep topography (have been there, though not doing any railfanning at the time), that line must be a real bear to move any cars on. So many hairpins that it almost looks like something a model railroader would have come up with. Where's the hidden helix?
