I thought the opposite, but there the proof is there in B&W:

Scroll down to the shot from April 2, 1940, which was a Tuesday. Seems very quiet for 5:40 p.m.. So the #5 cars had to cross the Muni tracks turning right onto McAllister. The new turnaround loop will then indeed recreate the past at that spot. Must have been fun all along Market for the 31, 5, 21, and 7 lines.
I think I was influenced into thinking Muni was in the center of Market by the switches for the B line at Geary and Market which were still there in the middle sixties. Muni had just welded them - it seemed Muni did not have much money to do anything. The crossover at O'Farrell and Powell on the cable car line was still there with the lost O'Farrell, Jones & Hyde line. Muni had just welded them up the best they could.
Anybody know how the Sacramento St. cable cars got into service from Washington & Mason carhouse? I cannot remember if there were any traces on Powell around Sacramento or Clay. Maybe they had some money to reconstruct the intersections when the Sacramento line tracks were torn out I assume in 1942.
