I'm getting in over my head on this one but...rather than having a larger prime mover (diesel engine or engines), this concept is a locomotive with a much smaller set of 3 I believe, prime mover/generator sets. They come on sequentially as needed. If the engine is running light, then only the first set would be running. With increased demand, then the second and even the third set would be on line. It's my understanding that these develop in the neighborhood of 700 HP per set. You could probably get a much better explanation by using a search engine. I wish I knew more about this & could help you.
